Jewish museum evacuated over suspicious item

The museum was evacuated about 11.30am before police and emergency services conducted an extensive search of the area and nearby surroundings.

A NSW Police spokesperson told ACM that a substance has been taken for further testing following the operation.

There were no reports of injuries and all roads around the museum in Darlinghurst in the Sydney CBD have now re-opened.

The operation involved several officers from Kings Cross Police Area Command, NSW Fire & Rescue and the Bomb Disposal Unit. Darlinghurst Rd was briefly closed during the police operation.

Police say there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The Sydney Jewish Museum showcases exhibits relating to the Holocaust, the history and achievements of Jewish people in Australia and issues of social justice, democracy and human rights in an Australian context, according to its website.
