Daniel Radcliffe nabs first Tony Award for Broadway show

The Best Featured Actor in a Musical award is Radcliffe's first Tony nomination and win after performing in five Broadway shows including Equus in 2008.

"Okay, I'm gonna just talk fast and try not to cry," Radcliffe said when accepting his award.

"This has been one of the best experiences of my life," he said.

Addressing his teary costars Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez he said "I don't really have to act in this show. I just have to look at you and feel everything I want to feel".

"I will never have it this good again," he said.

Radcliffe soared to fame at 11 years old after starring as Harry Potter in the film series by the same name.

He cited Broadway as the "first place he could truly be an actor and not just Harry Potter".

He gushed over the cast and crew during the short speech and thanked his parents "for playing Sondheim in the car".

Backstage the actor told reporters "when I finished Potter, I had no idea what my career was going to be. I'd already started doing some stage stuff, but I didn't know what the future held at all".

"Playing one character for a long time builds up in you a desire to do as many things as you possibly can. So yeah, I'm doing that right now."

The 34-year-old has been nominated for 40 awards in his career, including an Emmy, Bafta and Grammy.

He has won 22 awards including a 2023 Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Movie with Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
