The Australian Bureau of Statistics' population clock showed the magic number was crossed between 3.30pm and 4pm on January 24 (AEDT).
The number is based on the estimated population as of June 30, 2023, and the assumed births, deaths, arrivals and departures since then.
It's taken two years for the population to climb from 26 million in 2022.
Looking ahead, Australia is projected to reach 31.6 million in ten years' time.
And it's expected to be at least 30 years until the population clock ticks over to 40 million Aussie residents, in 2056.
Australia had the fastest population growth on record in the June 2023 quarter, with overseas arrivals the biggest contributor.
By the start of 2024 the global population was believed to top 8 million, according to the US Census Bureau.
