The striking portrait, snapped by Queensland photographer Rochelle James, took out the top gong in the Heritage Bank Photographic Awards.
More than 2700 photographers entered the award across several categories, an increase of about 20 per cent compared with last year.
Other photographers sharing in the $50,00 prize pool include Melissa Crisa from South Australia, Lyn Abernethy from Queensland, Frances Terlich from NSW, and Steve Day from Victoria.
Heritage Bank chief executive Peter Lock said the awards encouraged people of all ages and abilities to share their unique perspectives and stories.
"These images serve as a record of our social fabric," Mr Lock said.
Heritage Bank has acquired the five winning images as part of its corporate art collection.
They will be on display in the University of Southern Queensland's Toowoomba art gallery until October 20.
