The Barbadian singer, actor and tycoon's set began with the booming sound of a cheering audience and the opening refrain to her 2015 song B-tch Better Have My Money.

The popstar, pregnant and dressed in bright red, was suspended high above the NFL field with white tracksuit-clad back up dancers on staggered platforms.

She treated audiences to some signature dance moves during the show, singing hits including Work, Wild Thoughts and Umbrella.

Breaking with recent tradition, the singer performed without collaborators on stage, despite many of her songs featuring prominent artists.

Some viewers may be happy about this, as Rihanna breezed past Kanye West's verses while singing their 2011 song All Of The Lights.

Playing the Super Bowl half-time show has become a mark of music super-stardom, with memorable performances in recent years from Snoop Dogg, Dr Dre, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé and The Weeknd.

Rihanna has enjoyed musical acclaim for almost two decades, with the release of Pon De Replay launching her as a international star in 2005.

The Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs are facing off in the NFL Super Bowl LVII from Arizona's State Farm Stadium in Glendale.

Since releasing her last album in 2016, Rihanna became the second richest female entertainer, behind Oprah Winfrey, and the world's richest musician with USD$1.4 billion, according to Forbes magazine.
