An elderly woman has been smashed in the head by would-be thieves who set up a sting to attack her.

The 73-year-old woman was inside her Rockhampton home in central Queensland at 11pm on Wednesday, when suddenly the power supply went out.
"The woman exited the home and while checking the switchboard she was struck from behind. Hit in the head with an unknown implement," a Queensland Police spokesperson said.
"A male yelled at the woman, while a second male conducted a quick search of the house."

The pair fled empty handed soon after the attempted robbery.
The woman was taken to Rockhampton Hospital and treated for a laceration to the back of her head and bruising to her arms.
The attack comes just one day after an elderly woman was threatened with a knife and carjacked, while loading groceries into her car in Victoria.
Police have appealed for anyone who may have information, or noticed anything suspicious in the general vicinity to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Officers have urged home and business owners in the area to check their CCTV for footage.
