A police officer on Phillip Island is facing scrutiny after a video showed the officer joyriding in a shopping trolley pushed by a partygoer on New Year's Eve.

Footage uploaded to Instagram shows police and members of the public watching on as the pair finish a lap of the nearby roundabout.
Audio from the video includes onlookers cheering for the joyriders, laughing and clapping as they return to the crowd.
Victoria police said in a statement "Police have identified the officers involved and the matter is being addressed".
"Victoria Police are supportive of members positively engaging with the community but not at the risk of their own safety or other road users."

The video shows no traffic on the streets, giving the two trolley cruisers a safe run without injury.
