The lights display would be a walk-by event every night for Australia Day week at locations which could include Como Pleasure Grounds, Cooper Street Reserve and Burnum Burnum Reserve, Woronora.
The Australia Day and Citizenship Committee considered options for a COVID-19 safe event amid expectations restrictions on mass gatherings will continue into the middle of next year.

Other events in the proposed program, which will be reviewed at this month's council meeting, include:
- Citizenship ceremony in Hazelhurst gardens, repeating the successful 2021 event with 100 people. This can be scaled up if restrictions allow.
- Leisure Centre family fun days at Caringbah, Sutherland, Engadine and Como with free, ticketed sessions. Two sessions are planned (morning and afternoon) with numbers capped.
- Local Performer Activations in each of the five wards. Locations could include Dunningham Park, Hazelhurst, Como Pleasure Grounds, Cooper Street Reserve and Burnum Burnum Reserve.
- Recognition of local Dharawal culture and local elders - to be developed in consultation.
- Outdoor Family Film Night - cinema events could be scheduled at Cooper Street Reserve and alternative venues in the evening.
It was agreed local activations, local performers and family-based activities are a good fit.
- Sutherland Shire Council report
A council staff report said the Australia Day and Citizenship Committee agreed local activations, local performers and family-based activities were "a good fit".
"They provide a good mix where families can spend a full day on Australia Day, people come in and out of the areas at any time of the day to enjoy the day," the report said.
"The events provide the flexibility to 'scale up' or 'scale down' should Public Health Orders be amended."
The traditional Australia Day events are major outdoor performances, family entertainment and fireworks at Cronulla and Menai.
