Despite a record number of daily tests being conducted in 24 hours with more than 93,000 registered, it was another record that was more concerning: 163 new cases - the highest in a single day in the state.
Despite the large numbers and escalating virus cases, some chose to use Saturday not to stick to lockdown orders in Sydney, but take part in a protest instead.
Thousands of people, unmasked, marched from Victoria Park in inner Sydney to Town Hall to protest the lockdown restrictions, with a significant police presence throughout the city.
Several arrests have been made, with plastic bottles and plants being thrown at officers.
NSW police Deputy Commissioner Gary Worboys said it was not the time for a protest, and said he did not want to see the demonstration turn into a mass-spreading event.
Similar large protests were also seen in other cities around the country including Melbourne, which is also in lockdown, with flares being lit outside Victoria's State Parliament.
Adelaide, which is also under lockdown restrictions, and Brisbane also had similar protests.
While Covid has dominated the news cycle, the Tokyo Olympics are proving to be a welcome distraction, despite being held under a virus cloud.
It may only be day one of the Games, but plenty of Australians are in action, including the swimming team, who begin their campaign for gold on Saturday night.
It will still be an Olympics like no other, already being delayed one year due to the pandemic, and rising virus cases in Tokyo forcing crowds to be kept away.
Nonetheless, some Aussie gold will prove to be welcome good news after weeks of virus headlines and lockdown gloom.
