Don was the quintessential local member. His attendance at local functions, no matter how small and insignificant, was extraordinary.
I was always impressed by the fact that once he was introduced to someone, he never forgot their name, a characteristic indispensible for a politician.
It was one of the sadnesses of his life, that despite being a brilliant economist (MBA Harvard) he never achieved senior Cabinet rank, presumably because of his homosexuality.
Although his politics were not my politics, I recognise that the refusal of the political system to admit Don into the top echelons of public life was our loss.
At least, his name being attached to an open reserve is a small consolation.
