The Moana were $18 outsiders to beat England at Southern Cross Group Stadium in the first match of Wednesday’s final triple header of pool matches, having suffered 58-4 and 76-0 thrashings at the hands of Australia and New Zealand in the last week.
But when Te Amohaere Ngata-Aerengamate scored in the final minute it was enough to secure the Cook Islands’ first ever World Cup victory.
The Cooks had led 16-0 at half-time before the Lionesses drew level inside the final five minutes.
In the final pool game on Wednesday, New Zealand ensured they topped pool B with a 38-0 win over Papua New Guinea.
Earlier, Australia scored their biggest ever win in thrashing Canada 88-0.
Southern Cross Group Stadium will also host Sunday’s semi-finals where Australia take on Canada and New Zealand face England, who only scraped into the semis on for and against over the Cook Islands.
