$2.2 million in compensation given out in wake of Bourke Street tragedy

But more people are expected to receive support as the full impact of the trauma caused by January's horrifying incident is realised.

A car mowed down dozens of pedestrians in the heart of Melbourne's CBD, killing six people and leaving many more injured, both physically and psychologically.

WorkSafe and Transport Accident Commission figures show just over $2.2 million has been paid out to the families who lost loved ones and to those who were injured.

WorkSafe has received claims from 70 people - totalling about $1.69 million. This includes the family of two people who were killed, as well as from 15 people who were physically injured and 53 who suffered mental injury.

Of these claims, 14 did not need time off work and were for medical expenses only. Thirty-eight people have returned to either partial or full-time work and of the 16 who have not been able to go back to work, five are still suffering physical injuries and 11 are battling mental injury.

The claims are broken down into:

• $344,601 in weekly compensation payments.
• $680,323 in medical treatment and expenses.
• $668,273 in other costs, such as death and dependency claim payouts and occupational rehabilitation treatment.

The TAC received 106 claims totaling $578,926 for three of the deaths, 14 physical injuries and 89 mental injuries. This is broken down into:

• $377,004 for medical and like claims.
• $68,722 for income compensation.
• $133,200 for other associated costs.

The claims have covered services such as family counselling, dependency benefits and reimbursement of travel and accommodation expenses for people visiting family in hospital or attending a funeral.

Victims of Crime is also involved in providing counselling and helping with other costs, but its figures required an application before the Magistrates Court and weren't available for this story.

But its helpline received 965 referrals only a month after the incident, according to a previous ABC report.

Money donated to the victims from the state government's Bourke Street fund has also started to be distributed.

Fairfax Media was told $350,000 of the $1.65 million raised has been rolled out to the families of the deceased and to the injured who were in immediate need of financial help.

The fund, headed by former Victoria Police chief commission Ken Lay, Red Cross director Wenda??? Donaldson and prominent businesswoman Carol Schwartz, will start to give out the remaining donations.

WorkSafe and the TAC are leading the compensation scheme because a significant number of victims were workers, and they sustained injuries from a vehicle.

Spokesmen for both agencies said they were working closely with each other, and the Victims Support Agency, to ensure all victims and their families have the support and care they need.

"This was a horrific tragedy, and it has affected many people in many different ways," the spokesman for WorkSafe said.
