Zac Veron started his career as a minister in Carlton and spoke to the Leader about the milestone during an interview in 1996.
It was a path set early in life.
‘’It all started when I was five and was taken to the local Sunday school,’’ he said.
‘’Some faithful teachers taught me the Bible and it all started from there.’’
After a brief career as an accountant he retrained as a minister in his 20s.
He spent 12 years at Carlton and the last 10 years as CEO of Anglican Youthworks.
He said it wasn’t an easy decision to move back to parish work.
‘’Ten years in a job is a long time,’’ he said.
‘’It was a big job with 200 staff so it was quite demanding.’’
He started on Monday and will spend the next few weeks meeting people and easing into the job.
He said one of the challenges would be the building which would need attention.
Parking was another issue that would be looked at.
He said he would collaborate with the congregation on ways forward but was considering adding a third Sunday service for young people.
‘’We live in the area, so its our area and we’re happy to be back,’’ he said.
As well as his work locally he is also acting rector at Lord Howe Island
He said all around the world most people still asked the same questions.
‘’Questions like who am I, what does God want me to do, how do I love my spouse and how do I love my kids without going nuts, how do I deal with the pressures and stresses of the world,’’ he said.
‘’I think a lot of people turn inward and find no answer there because in the end we can’t save ourselves.
‘’When you see Jesus as he’s presented in the Bible there is hope in the certainty of resurrection.’’
His first Sunday service will be held on May 1 and will initially look at the 10 commandments before focusing on grace and truth.
