He was chosen from an outstanding group of finalists from across the city, including public schools at Yowie Bay, Rouse Hill, Cambridge Gardens, Alfords Point, Robert Townson at Raby, Inaburra High School at Bangor, Freeman Catholic College at Bonnyrigg Heights, Galston High School and Broderick Gillawarna Special School at Revesby.
The year 6 teacher was unaware he had won the prize until he entered a special assembly at the school on September 14.
"This is the craziest thing that's ever happened to me," Mr Eggins said.
2UE presenter Jason Morrison congratulated Mr Eggins (pictured above) and said it was obvious that he was popular among the pupils.
He presented the teacher with a trophy and a $10,000 prize.
Mr Eggins thanked all those who had voted for him, but said it was not really about him.
"This is about the teachers all over Australia and all over the world," he said.
"I really don't think I deserved it; I'm just doing what I love to do. I do my job as everyone else does.
"I'm so pleased to be at York Public School. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for all the teachers at this school who support me."
