St George Hospital was established in 1894 and is now a 627-bed major teaching hospital of the University of NSW and a Level 1 Trauma Centre for the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.
Its emergency department is one of the busiest in the state and is being redeveloped at a cost of more than $30 million.
St George Private Hospital opened in November 1995 following the amalgamation of Pacific, Bexley and Kogarah private hospitals. It has about 236 beds, 12 operating theatres, a 10-bed intensive-care unit, an eight-bed coronary-care unit, cardiac catheter lab, oncology day centre, obstetric unit and a special-care nursery.
Calvary Health Care Sydney is a public health-care facility specialising in rehabilitation and palliative care.
It operates under the auspices of the Little Company of Mary, a Catholic health-care organisation, and had a $7 million redevelopment in 2011.
Wesley Hospital Kogarah is a 30-bed private facility that treats hundreds of people each year for alcohol and drug addiction, depression and anxiety, bipolar and borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia and psychosis.
Kogarah is also home to some of Australia's best oncologists, heart specialists, fertility specialists, cosmetic surgeons, psychologists and ear, nose and throat specialists.
