A NSW Rural Fire Service member rescued a koala on Heathcote Road Wednesday night but sadly it later had to be put down by a vet due to its severe injuries.

Jarratt Hadid of Sandy Point found the koala, dubbed "Sandy", after it was hit by a vehicle.
‘‘Although it was a very unfortunate outcome hopefully we can get a good public awareness message out for the importance of using caution when travelling on the roadways,’’ Mr Hadid wrote on Facebook.

The animal was taken to the fire station and the NSW Wildlife Information Rescue and Education Service Inc contacted to treat the koala. Its injuries were not related to the fires in Western Sydney on Tuesday.
