The musical is the latest production presented by Engadine Musical Society and will be staged at Sutherland Entertainment Centre on May 14 to18.
Director Meg Day said the production was a new interpretation of the classic show featuring a strong cast of household names in the region's musical theatre scene.
"We've chosen to create a modern production not set in a particular time but in modern costume," Day said.
"We will [project] television reports, posters and newspaper articles onto the stage so people can connect the songs, and provide extra links and build on the story."
She said directors of Jesus Christ Superstar were always encouraged to treat the musical as a blank canvas with room for interpretation.
"The songs are amazing and we try and stay as true to the songs and give the story a different take people haven't seen before."
The show boasts a cast and ensemble of 40 performers including some new names to Engadine Musical Society.
The role of Jesus Christ will be performed by James Gander whose powerful voice can be attributed to a background in opera.
Tanya Boyle will play Mary Magdalene.
"I wanted to give Mary more depth, and Tanya is the best person to give her those extra dimensions," Day said.
Judas Iscariot, the tragic character and disciple of Christ, will be performed by Daniel O'Connell.
