Coleman is a former Sharks first grade winger who played 123 first grade games for Cronulla.
Irvine said members should decide whether he would remain on the board at the election next month and accepted responsibility for some of the dramas that beset that club.
"I feel like my presence in the club may be an obstacle. I’m standing down as chairman of the board and from the board of directors.
"Any anger to be directed should be directed at me."
Former Sharks winger Glenn Coleman will replace Irvine as chairman.
Ex- Brisbane Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen will start at the Sharks today.
